The Legend of Marquette Mountain: A Legacy of Northwoods Adventure

High above the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s rugged Upper Peninsula, Marquette Mountain Resort is more than a destination—it’s a Northwoods institution. Since 1957, we have evolved from a local favorite into a premier four-season adventure hub for skiing, snowboarding, and downhill mountain biking. Our story is fueled by the spirit of the mountain and a steadfast commitment to providing exceptional outdoor recreation for the Great Lakes community and beyond.

History & Beginnings

Our story began in late 1957 when the mountain first opened as Cliffs Ridge, operating on land leased from the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company. Nestled in the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the resort quickly became a beloved cornerstone for winter sports enthusiasts, offering a unique blend of rugged natural beauty and thrilling slopes. What started as a local ski hill has evolved into a premier destination for those seeking the authentic Northwoods experience, staying true to our roots while growing alongside the Marquette community.

Evolution and Growth: A New Era of Year-Round Adventures

Over the decades, Marquette Mountain has transformed from a local secret into a premier regional destination. Our mission expanded as we hit key milestones that shaped the mountain you see today:

1972

Enhancing Accessibility

We installed our first chairlift—a Riblet double—marking our commitment to better accessibility and more time on the slopes for our skiers.

1982

A Community Identity

We officially rebranded to “Marquette Mountain,” a name that reflects our deep connection to the local community and the majestic Upper Peninsula landscape that defines us

2020 & Beyond
